Writing Warm-Up: What Does “To What Extent” Mean?

Have you ever gotten an essay question that asks: “To what extent do you agree?” …and thought, What does that even mean? It’s basically asking: How much do you agree?

But here’s the tricky part: the answer usually isn’t simply yes or no.

Think about this question: To what extent does technology make our lives better?

You could say: “Technology makes our lives better.” But is that completely true?

Technology can make it easier to communicate, learn, and get information. But it can also make us more distracted, connected to our phones, or dependent on technology.

So maybe the better question is: How much does technology make our lives better—and when does it not?

That’s what “to what extent” is asking you to figure out.

Warm-Up

Pick one question and write a short paragraph:

• To what extent does social media affect friendships?

• To what extent is homework helpful for students?

• To what extent does technology make our lives easier?

• To what extent does competition motivate people to do their best?

• To what extent are people responsible for the consequences of their choices?

As you write, ask yourself: Is this completely true? What might make it less true? What evidence would help me decide? Good writing doesn’t always mean choosing one side. Sometimes the strongest answer is: “It depends.”
